Prior to photography the best way to communicate a description of a place was to draw and paint it. there were artists that accompanied Lewis and Clark on their expedition across the western part of the North American Continent. Pictures were brought back of the way the landscape looked and the features of the indigenous populations. Likewise the records of the way parts of Switzerland looked several hundred years age is available with these prints of drawings and paintings. The accuracy was important obviously.
